BRIGHT START TO THE GREATEST RACE

The cars are soon on the famous Le Mans circuit for the first time in 2013 as the test day gets under way for the World's greatest motor race. For almost a year people everywhere have been waiting for this moment! The test day kicks off a hectic fortnight, which will climax on 23rd June with the huge crowd of supporters flocking to the track under the podium to crown the winner of this year's Le Mans 24 hour classic. Between now and then laughter and tears will follow each other in rapid succession! Thousands of stories, whether of great or little import, will be written between the centre of Le Mans and the Mulsanne corner at the southern extremity of the circuit. From this day, memories will be made, dreams will come true and the 56 garages will be a theatre of great joy and huge disappointments. There is always something at stake at the test day. It is THE day that plunges teams into a state of doubt or panic or, on the contrary, gives them the impetus and the confidence to reach for the heights. In short, it sets the tone. This year there are many questions: will Audi or Toyota come out on top psychologically speaking in LM P1? Which of the 24 LM P2s prototypes will find the best setup as they are all potential category winners? Will the new Vipers, back in GTE Pro after a 10-year absence, be able to match the pace of the Ferraris, Porsches, Corvettes and Aston Martins? For Austrlaian V8 Supercar Star Jason Bright, today is the fulfilment of a career long dream. For as long as I have known Jason he has always had a burning desire to race at this, the world's greatest race...

AUDI ON POLE IN SPA SHOOTOUT

Audi has dominated qualifying for round 2 of the FIA World Endurance Championship at the famous Spa-Francochamp circuit. Marcel Fässler (CH), Benoît Tréluyer (F)  and André Lotterer (D) are on pole with a four lap average of 1m 59.961s. The number 1 Audi R18 e-tron quattro were the only driver squad to break the two-minute mark. An impressive performance by Lucas di Grassi (BR), Marc Gené (E) and Oliver Jarvis (GB), they share the number 3 car which has been aerodynamically optimized for the upcoming run at Le Mans. But even on the track in the Ardennes that is less suitable for this body version, they qualified for the front row with a time of 2m 00.236, missing the best time by only 0.274s. di Grassi even set the fastest time of the day at 1m 58.934s. Third place is shared by the series leaders Tom Kristensen (DK) and Allan McNish (GB). They are contesting the race together with Loïc Duval (F). As Audi’s best immediate rival, the number 7 Toyota in position four missed the best time by 0.986s. It was a frustrating day for Toyota as its two TS030 HYBRIDs qualified fourth and fifth for the race.

TOYOTA & ASTON MARTIN TOP SLOT IN SHANGHAI SHOOTOUT

Toyota have followed up their pole position at their home track in Fuji with a second consecutive pole in Shanghai. Alexander Wurz put the Toyota on pile with a lap of 1:48.273. He headed Allan McNish in the Audi R18 e-tron quattro by a tenth of a second and the gap between the Japanese manufacturer and the third placed car, the Audi of André Lotterer, was just three tenths. “We know we have to put in a good performance to beat the Audis in qualifying and the TS030 HYBRID was better today than the driver to be honest." said Mr Wurz. "In Brazil I got the perfect pole lap but here I didn’t have the best last sector and lost a few tenths. I didn’t calculate enough for the change in wind direction so lost some time there. Nevertheless it was good enough to fight the Audis for pole position so I am very happy." The LMP1 Privateer teams followed, with just a hair between the first three in the category...just three hundredths of a second.  There was a gap of only 0.016 seconds between Karun Chandhok’s JRM HPD ARX 03a and Neel Jani’s  Rebellion Racing Lola-Toyota, the Swiss entry being the interloper between the JRM car and its HPD ARX 03a twin at Strakka Racing.  It’s the first time this season that JRM has been quickest amongst the LMP1 Privateer teams.

TOYOTA END AUDI DOMINATION IN BRAZIL

Toyota have ended Audi's domination of the World Endurance Championship with a win in the 6 hours of San Paulo in Brazil. The petrol/hybrid TS030 of Alexander Wurz and Nicolas Lapierre started from pole position and took the chequered flag one minute ahead of the #1 Audi e-tron Quattro of Le Mans winners Marcel Fässler, André Lotterer and Benoît Tréluyer. The second Audi, the non hybrid R18 Ultra of Lucas di Grassi, Tom Kristensen and Allan McNish finished third. The victory to Toyota was not only a great thrill for the team, but brought some much needed competitiveness into the premiere LMP1 class which suffered following the withdrawal of Peugeot. “This is an incredible day for all of us in the team." said Yoshiaki Kinoshita, Team President Toyota Racing.  "To stand on the top step of the podium has been our dream and to achieve this is only our third race is a dream come true." LE MANS 2012 AUDI’S, AUSSIES AND SHAKA PONK

Audi have created motorsport history by becoming the first manufacturer to take a hybrid powered car to victory in the world's leading sports car race, the 24-hour of Le Mans. The team's number one R18 e-tron quattro driven by Andre Lotterer, Marcel Fassler and local driver Benoit Treluyer won the classic event for the second year in a row. They finished one lap ahead of team-mates Alan McNish, Tom Kristensen and birthday boy Dindo Cappello. It was  perfect one, two, three finish for the German marque with the non-hybrid R18 Ultra  of Oliver Jarvis, Marco Bonanomi and Mike Rockenfeller completing the podium. AUDI STILL ON TOP BUT TOYOTA TEAM IMPRESSES

Alan McNish has set the fastest time at the  Le Mans test day, but Audi will leave the circuit with plenty to think about after several niggling mechanical problems and a crash to McNish late in the day. With a fastest lap of of 3m 25.927s, the Scotsman was half a second quicker than team-mate Andre Lotterer in the second Audi R18 e-tron quattro, which recorded a 3m26.468s. With the Hybrids on top in the intra team fight for the fastest lap it was Loic Duval who was the fastest non hybrid car with a 3m26.561. Again the main talking point in the second session was the speed of the new Toyota TS030 Petrol Hybrid. The car, driven by Alexander Wurz split the Audi R10 Ultras with a 3m27.204 in what was a most impressive debut.

TOYOTA RETURN TO TESTING AS AUDI DEBUT AT SPA

Although they won't be at Spa for round two of the World Endurance Championship the Toyota TS030 hybrid will be a the track this weekend. The team will complete a functionality test of its new chassis at the Magny-Cours circuit in France. Following the accident at Paul Ricard on 4 April, which damaged the monocoque of the first TS030, the team has worked hard to accelerate production of a second car. This will be completed directly before transportation to the one-day functionality test. A total of seven test days were cancelled in April as a result of the testing accident, giving the team no opportunity to validate the aerodynamic and hybrid system specifications intended for its first race. So the team had no choice but to miss the WEC Six Hours of Spa-Francorchamps event, which takes place on 3-5 May. Yoshiaki Kinoshita, Team President: “I would like to express my thanks to the staff members at Toyota Motorsport GmbH who have worked so hard to deliver our second monocoque ahead of schedule. Now we have a very intense testing programme to prepare for Le Mans, beginning with an initial functionality test to shakedown our systems.”
