V8 SUPERCARS: TELL ‘EM THEY’RE DREAMIN’

With the wrangling over their television rights continuing, and faced with falling ratings and crowd numbers, you might think that V8 Supercars Australia might be keen to make as many friends as possible in the wider media. However judging by the new terms and conditions imposed on those requiring media accreditation for the 2013 season, it would appear that VESA is intent on making coverage even harder and more restrictive. With accreditation opening for the 2013 season, the updated terms & conditions make for some very interesting and sometime concerning reading. First cab off the rank is this gem: "V8 Supercars only accredits publications and agencies: a) with a minimum circulation of 20,000 for magazines and 50,000 for newspapers" That one is bound to send a few shockwaves through the ranks of those at Australia's longest serving motorsport publication "Australian Auto Action" With a ACB audited circulation of only "10,370" per issue, Foges and the AAA crew will have to get used to the somewhat less rarified air of the Shannons Nationals Media Centre, as by my very basic maths they fall about 9630 short of the minimum requirement. Oh and whose figures are we using here? The independent Audit Bureaux of Australia or the notoriously unreliable "publisher's estimate"? If we are looking for audited, independent figures, then that pretty much rules out all those publications who are not a part of the ABA system.

DOES DICK SPONSOR SANDOWN? DICK DOES!

Electronics retail giant Dick Smith is the surprise sponsor of the returning Sandown 500 race in September. Woolworths, the owners of the once iconic brand, announced earlier this year their intention to sell off the brand and close more than 100 of the company's stores in Australia and New Zealand. Speculation is growing that the new owners for the company could be announced as soon as next month and if this is the case one would assume they have been informed and approve of the sponsorship deal. In March, Woolworths revealed the divestment and restructure of the Dick Smith brand had cost it $217 million. Despite this the brand has performed well in 2011 - 2012 with a 2.3 percent rise in sales to $1.5 billion. Tyson White, Dick Smith Merchandise Manager said that the company chose to sponsor the 500 as it was "a perfect fit" for Dick Smith. "...it’s a truly national sport which is increasingly growing in popularity." he said.

FORMULA 5000 LEADS AUSTRALIA’S BIGGEST HISTORIC RACE WEEKEND

New Zealand driver Steve Ross (McRae GM1) is set to claim the 2011/12 MSC F5000 Tasman Cup Revival Series crown at Australia's biggest and most prestigious classic motor racing meeting this weekend. Ross and 27 other F5000 drivers are amongst the 500-odd entries for this weekend's Phillip Island Classic meeting at the 4.4km circuit an hour-and-a-half's drive south of Melbourne. After finishing second to series super-vet Ken Smith (Lola T430) for the past two years Ross crossed the Tasman earlier this week with an 88 point lead over fellow McRae GM1 driver Aaron Burson with Rotorua man Brett Willis (Lola T330) third. Though defending series champion Ken Smith will not be at the meeting the field includes Burson, Willis, Class A (for earlier cars) standout David Arrowsmith (Lotus 70) and former series champion Ian Clements (Lola T332). It also includes UK-based series regular Greg Thornton (Chevron B24) and two of the three US drivers who contested some of the New Zealand rounds of this season's MSC series, category original Eric Haga (Lola T190) and top US historic single-seater racer Harin de Silva (Surtees TS8). The growing strength of the category across the Tasman can also be seen in the strong domestic entry - with 15 cars led by series regulars Chris Lambden (McRae GM1) and John Bryant (Lola T140) in local hands.

RAIN DAMPENS BATHURST PRACTICE

Thursday's practice session at a wet Mount Panorama has been cancelled due to a dispute over wet weather tyres. Two different batches of the control Dunlop tyres are present at the track, leading to concerns by some teams that one batch could be better than another, giving the teams that use them an unfair advantage. According to the website Speedcafe.com, unattributed "Paddock speculation" is suggesting that the newer of the two batches could prove up to four seconds per lap faster than the older tyres. Teams have now agreed to new regulations that will see them restricted to using just five sets of wet weather tyres in the race. The original supplementary race regulations stated that an unlimited amount of wet tyres could be used. Weather Reports for the weekend indicate wet and cold conditions will continue with heavy overnight fog and the chance of afternoon storms over the weekend.

James Courtney is the 2010 Australian V8 Supercar Champion after a steady race at Homebush. Driving for the Dick Johnson Racing team, Courtney finished 14th which was more than enough to clinch the title. Steven Richards, in his last race for the Ford Performance Racing Team finished second with Van  Gisbergen holding on for third.
