Holden legend Mark Skaife is weighing up his future as speculation grows that the five time Bathurst winner is set to announce his retirement from V8 Supercar racing. Despite denials from current Dick Johnson Racing driver Will Davison that he is to join Garth Tander at the Holden Racing Team in 2009, insiders in the world of V8 Supercars are saying that the deal is done and Holden are waiting on Skaife's decision before any public announcement is made. 2008 has been a tough one for Skaife who currently sits in 12th place in the championship coming into this weekend's round on Queensland's Gold Coast. Skaife has been under considerable pressure from the media and fans for most of the year and after a disappointing Bathurst where he crashed the car at Forest Elbow the dogs have been barking that his illustrious career is over.

Phillip Island 500 winners Garth Tander and Mark Skaife have firmed to equal favouritism for today's Bathurst 1000 after taking pole position for the Australian classic at Mount Panorama. Tander set the fastest time in Saturday's Top Ten shootout and despite a last place charge by FPV driver Mark Winterbottom it will be Holden on pole. Tander's time of 2 mins:07.2963 seconds was still off the record of New Zealand driver Greg Murphy of 2 mins: 06.8594 seconds during the 2003 top-10 shootout.

Garth Tander and Mark Skaife have broken Holden's enduro drought with a win in a thrilling Phillip Island 500. Tander took the lead on lap 103 of the 113-lap race after a rare mistake by Ford driver Jamie Whincup who had led for much of the race. Whincup had led from pole position but a heavy shower midway through the race caused chaos as teams and drivers struggled with their choice of tyre.
