Sportscars will take centre stage at the 2011 Phillip Island Classic Festival of Motorsport. The annual event is widely regarded as the biggest and best in Australia has again attracted a huge entry of approaching 500 vehicles. The most popular category of the meeting are the Production Sports Cars, with 105 already entered – around a quarter of the total cars at the meeting! The Group Sa and Sb cars are again fully-subscribed, with a lone Shelby GT350, a Chevrolet Corvette and a Morgan Plus 8 taking on 12 MGs, nine Austin Healeys, eight Triumph TRs, four Porsches, a Lotus Elan and a Mercedes-Benz 190SL. And in the always-popular Group Sc, at least 10 Porsche 911s will face three De Tomaso Panteras, three MGB V8s, three Ferraris, a Renault Alpine and a Corvette Stingray. With the feature event of the meeting being the Sunday’s 30-minute race for big banger sports cars, the 2011 Phillip Island Classic features one of the strongest sports car fields seen for many years, with nine Lolas, six Porsches, two Elfins, a Sauber-Mercedes and a genuine Ford GT40 amongst the early entries.

Porsche have continued their recent support for the Phillip Island Historic Classic with the announcement of a star line up of cars for the meeting on March 18 - 20. The cars coming the Porsche Museum include the famous 935/78 coupe nick-named ‘Moby Dick’ by Porsche race mechanics because of its large and extended ‘whale tail’. The Moby Dick was with climax of 935 race car development. Powered by a 621 kW (845 hp) turbocharged 3.2 litre six-cylinder development of the production 911 engine, it reached a top speed of 366 km/h at Le Mans in 1978. Perhaps the most recognisable of all Porsche race cars – the famous 956/962 which won the Le Mans 24 Hour seven times between 1982 and 1994 – is also part of the exclusive collection that will be seen at the Phillip Island Classic in March. The car secured for Australia is the Rothmans 962 raced to victory in 1987 by Derek Bell, Hans Stuck and Al Holbert. From the 1960s comes the eight cylinder 908/02 Spyder that won the 1969 Targa Florio and the 718 RS 60 Spyder that won the 1960 Daytona 24 Hour race. Other special Porsche's in the collection include the lightweight 911 SC raced by Walter Rohrl in the gruelling 1980 San Remo rally and a V10-engined Porsche Carrera GT road car from 2003.

DUBAI (January 15th, 2011) The Need for Speed-Schubert team from Oschersleben, Germany has won the sixth running of the Dunlop 24H of Dubai, the first international endurance race of the year for GTs, touring cars and 24H specials. After 24 hours of racing at the 5.390 kilometres long Dubai Autodrome, Claudia Hürtgen drove the car across the finish line. The team had with Hürtgen, Augusto Farfus, Edward Sandström and Tommy Milner racked up a total of 594 laps with the BMW Z4 GT3. This success makes BMW the most successful car brand in history of the Dunlop 24H of Dubai with a total of three race wins following earlier successes in 2006 and 2007. Second place in this year’s race was taken by the Italian AF Corse team with Eppe Perazzini, Michal Broniszewski, Lorenzo Case and Marco Cioci driving the Ferrari F430 GT2. The Black Falcon team with Thomas Jäger, Kenneth Heyer, Jan Seyffarth and Sean Paul Breslin ended up third with their Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG.

Porsche is continuing to extend its performance in the field of hybrid technology with an exciting new release at this years North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The two-seater mid-engine coupé the 918 RSR clearly reveals what happens when the technology fitted in the 911 GT3 R hybrid and the design of the 918 Spyder are transferred to a modern, innovative super sports car. The 911 GT3 R hybrid racing car proved to be an attention magnet during competition racing on the Nuerburgring Nordschleife circuit, during the American Le Mans Series races (ALMS) in Road Atlanta/USA and the ILMC run in China's Zhuhai. It demonstrated its massive performance potential under realistic motor racing conditions against top competitors. The 911 GT3 R Hybrid, referred to internally as the “Race Lab" actually surpassed the high expectations of Porsche Motorsport. Competitiveness, high reliability and exemplary fuel efficiency combined with top performance under-scored the Porsche technicians' basic idea of generating additional power in an intelligent manner. The 911 GT3 R Hybrid obtains its additional power from its own vehicle dynamics when braking. Porsche is now transplanting this technology into the mid-engine coupé 918 RSR, the motor sports version of the 918 Spyder concept car.

Philip Island's CUE one hour Sportscar Enduro next weekend is shaping up to be one of the biggest and best Sportscar races ever seen in Melbourne. A highlight of PIARC's 20th anniversary Island Magic, the one hour race has attracted a quality field of cars and drivers from all over Australia. Former Australian GT Champion Mark Eddy leads the entries in his spectacular Audi R8. The R8 is just made for this type of event and reliability is unlikely to be a problem give Audi's reputation for longevity. Lamborghini will be represented by the Gallardo's of Victorian State Champion Ted Huglin and Mark Seamons. Huglin's car is the current model racing in the European GT3 championships and as such is not eligible for the Australian titles. The fight between Huglin and Eddy will be a highlight. The race will also feature the return to racing of veteran competitor Murray Carter. At an age when most people have long since retired the 79 year old will debut his new Corvette Z06. The car features plenty of ideas from the GT1 & 2 cars of the ALMS and Carter certainly knows his way around the Island track. Fans of the classic Ford GT40 will be thrilled to see the return to Melbourne of NSW State Sportscar star Iain Pretty in his Roaring 40's replica.
