LOEB GETS OFF TO A WINNING START IN GT: With Video

In a thrilling FIA GT Series opener at Nogaro this afternoon, Sebastien Loeb (FRA) and Alvaro Parente (P), claimed a superb victory to ensure that the 2013 season will be one to savour this year. Taking his Sebastien Loeb Racing McLaren MP4-12C to the chequered flag, 9-time World Rally Champion and motorsport legend, Sebastien Loeb, was roared on to victory by a huge Easter holiday crowd at the traditional Coupes De Pâques meeting at Nogaro in south-west France. Loeb, who took over the wheel from Parente just after the half way mark of the 60-minute race, hunted down the Belgian Audi Club Team WRT entered Audi R8 LMS ultra of Niki Mayr-Melnhof (DEU) with just 8-minutes of the race remaining. In a breathtaking around the outside manoeuvre at the hairpin, Loeb surged ahead and eventually won the race by a clear 5-seconds. For Loeb, it was a dream start to his first full-season campaign as a circuit driver and immediately after the race he paid tribute to his team mate, saying: “Alvaro was very good today, he did a great start in the qualifying race and even if our competitors closed the door he never let them go. It is very different from what I am used to do, I am here to learn, but I had a really good time driving the car today, it was a great fight from the start to the finish.”

GT WORLD SERIES STARTS THIS WEEKEND

After a 2012 season that finished on a disappointing note, the 2013 FIA GT season gets underway at the Nogao circuit in France this Easter weekend. Fifteen teams representing eight manufacturers will contest the series, although a last minute withdrawal by the Vita4one BMW team will see only fourteen teams on the grid at Nogaro. VETTEL ON TOP AS McLAREN STRUGGLE IN MELBOURNE

Sebastian Vettel has opened the 2013 season with a Friday cleansweep, topping both practice sessions comfortably at Albert Park. A truck arrived overnight filled with upgrades for his RBR9, which the team went about testing throughout the day - Vettel seeming unperturbed by the modifications being made to his car. Further down the pit lane, however, McLaren had an afternoon to forget as serious problems in the MP4-28 hampered the day's running. Speculation throughout pre-season testing that the largely redesigned McLaren wasn't up to scratch seem to be proving true, with the team struggling to understand its own new concept. McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh admitted that taking the team In a new direction was risky, but believed it would ultimately pay off.

WELL F¨&% ME! KIMI WINS IN ƒU©!Ng ABU DHABI

Kimi Raikkonen has taken the first win of his comeback in a surprisingly exciting Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Raikkonen who pulled his way up to second on the first lap after starting from fifth on the grid, inherited the lead when Lewis Hamilton stopped on track with a fuel pressure problem on lap 20. The Finn didn't have it easy, however, with the closing ten laps characterised by intense pressure from Ferrari's Fernando Alonso in second place. 'I'm happy, but there's nothing to jump about. I'm just happy for everybody in the team.' he said. It was the first win since Japan 2008 of the team based in Enstone. Alonso made up four places from his starting position for the opportunity to challenge for the win, but his late charge fizzled on the final lap, Raikkonen pushing slightly faster and evading the Spaniard's DRS reach. 'I'm very happy,' started Alonso. 'I think we were not super competitive this weekend. 'We had to fight all through the race. We had some good overtaking and very good strategy that gave us the opportunity to fight for victory. 'Second, I think, was the maximum for us today.' Most surprising, however, was Sebastian Vettel in third place, after starting from the pit lane.

HAMILTON ON POLE AS PENALTY HITS VETTEL

Lewis Hamilton has taken a commanding pole position in Abu Dhabi to disrupt the Championship battle between Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel. Hamilton posted a time of 1 minute 40.620seconds during his first run and, despite embarking on a second run at the end of the session, it was good enough to have him start from first on tomorrow's grid. 'Very excited,' said Hamilton. 'The first time in a long time to be ahead of the [Red] Bulls. Mark Webber qualified a surprise second after admitting during the week he wasn't harbouring high hopes for his weekend at a track on which he has historically under performed. 'Credit to Lewis and McLaren, it's obviously a quick car this weekend,' started Webber. 'We did the best we could. Webber may prove, much to his chagrin, an important part of his team-mate's Championship with Sebastian Vettel qualifying just a tenth behind him in third place. Vettel, however, will now have to star from the pit lane, after the Championship leader was forced to stop and abandon his car during his warm-down lap.

YOU’LL NEVER GUESS WHO’S ON POLE IN INDIA… Oh Damn.

Sebastian Vettel has taken his third successive pole position for tomorrow's Indian GP, fending off Championship rival Fernando Alonso by four places. Red Bull looked particularly confident in India, and it translated into a one-two front row lockout on the grid, with Vettel less than a tenth ahead of Mark Webber. Next best was Lewis Hamilton, two tenths behind Webber in his upgraded McLaren and new extensive sideburns. Jenson Button managed fourth, tucked up alongside his team-mate, while Fernando Alonso finds himself all the way back in fifth, with all the work ahead of him tomorrow to minimise the damage done to his Championship challenge.

Sergio Perez will drive for McLaren alongside Jenson Button from 2013, the team confirmed this evening. Perez, currently in his second year in Formula One, put pen to paper on a 'multi-year' contract to move him from Sauber to McLaren, replacing the outgoing Lewis Hamilton. The Mexican was part of the Ferrari young driver academy, but Ferrari president Luca Montezemolo has insisted all year that he was not yet ready for a senior drive in Formula One. McLaren clearly disagrees, and wasted no time snapping up Perez as soon as it became evident it would be unable to retain Hamilton. 'I'm thrilled and delighted to have become a Vodafone McLaren Mercedes driver,' said Perez. 'For more than 40 years McLaren has been a team that every racing driver has aspired to drive for. I was brought up on the great stories of Ayrton Senna's many world championship triumphs for McLaren and I'm truly honoured that they've chosen me to partner Jenson from 2013 onwards. 'I've spent the 2012 season working very hard to demonstrate my potential, but I've always remained humble and focused.'

McLAREN MASTER MONZA

Lewis Hamilton led a McLaren one-two in qualifying on a sunny Saturday afternoon in the Parco di Monza. Hamilton set his pole lap early on in the final sessions, the run ultimately being low-key in light of the tactics being played by the other teams. "We've managed to work on the setup, and they've [the team] done a fantastic job," said the pole-sitter. "Great effort from the lads." "Pretty happy, and it's great for the team to have me and Jenson at the front." Jenson Button slotted in behind him with his final fast lap after the flag, inching just one-tenth behind his teammate - and a similar distance ahead of the unlikely Felipe Massa. "For us both to be on the front row is fantastic for the team," started Button, echoing Hamilton's sentiment. "[But] even being on the front row, it isn't going to be an easy race here," he continued. "But it's the best place to be."
