Brazilian driver Raphael Matos is the 2008 Indy Lights series Champion despite finishing third behind team-mate Arie Luyendyk Jr and Ana Beatriz at Chicagoland. The race win was Luyendyk's first in Indy Lights competition after a carrer of 61 races. Matos won the title ahead of Richard Antinucci whose championship hopes finished up against the wall after a lap 26 accident with Sean Guthrie. Australian driver James Davison was fifth to finish ninth in the series.

New Zealand's Scott Dixon is the new Indy Racing Leauge Champion despite a thrilling, last to first drive by arch rival Helio Castroneves. In a closing round straight out of Hollywood, the popular Castroneves overcame a start at the back of the grid to just edge out Dixon in a thrilling finish that saw the cars locked together, side by side for the final few laps.

Dario Franchitti is to return to openwheel competition next year joining Target Chip Ganassi Racing as team mate to New Zealand's Scott Dixon. Franchitti will replace former Indy 500 winner Dan Wheldon who leaves Ganassi to return to Panther Racing. Wheldon, began his IndyCar Series career as a driver with Panther Racing in 2002, has signed a multi-year contract to drive the team's No. 4 car beginning in 2009.

Helio Castroneves ended a 30 race winless streak after winning the latest round of the Indy Racing League at Infineon Raceway. The win closed the gap at the top of the series championship table to only 43 points. Kiwi driver Scott Dixon, finished back in 12th place as Castroneves beat his Penske teammate, Australia's Ryan Briscoe, to the finish line by 5.2926 seconds.
