TESTING CRASH PUTS TOYOTA OUT OF SPA WEC DEBUT

In a move that can only be described as "interesting" Toyota have announced that as a result of a "testing accident" it is not able to participate in the WEC Six Hours of Spa-Francorchamps. A media release sent out today, April 11, claimed that during testing at Paul Ricard, on Wednesday 4 April, the TS030 HYBRID was involved in an accident which damaged the team’s only monocoque. According to the team the damage is too severe to repair. A replacement monocoque cannot be produced and sufficiently tested to ensure reliability within the limited time available. "Therefore Toyota Racing has informed the organisers of the FIA World Endurance Championship of its decision to withdraw from the WEC Six Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, due to be held on 5 May." The decision is sure to raise some eyebrows with the team now to make its first appearance at the Le Mans 24 Hours in June.

NEW SMALL HOLDEN PLAN REVEALED

General Motors' Australian division Holden has today announced the building of a new small car at the companies plant in Elizabeth in South Australia. The new car which at this stage has not been named will be built on the company's global Delta platform was announced by Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd whose Government has provided the Australian Auto Industry with millions of dollars of financial assistance. The new car will be supported by the Australian taxpayer with the Commonwealth contributing around$149 million over three years starting in 2009-10 to the project. Money will also come from the South Australian Government. Mr Rudd says the move gives confidence to a struggling industry. “If you look at the downturn in auto sales in the last 12 months, this is really tough,“ he said in a yet another triumph of stating the bleeding obvious. The new front-wheel-drive vehicle will be built in both sedan and hatch form, with design and engineering work takeing place at the company's Australian headquarters in Port Melbourne, Victoria.

TOYOTA BACK TO LE MANS ?

The rumours became whispers now the whispers are becoming a quiet roar, Toyota is heading back to Le Mans. The stories have been around for years but with the limitations of Formula One and the high profile of the Le Mans series in both Europe and the important USA market, the chances of a return by Toyota are growing. Speaking on the Australian television show “In Pit Lane” Toyota's Australian motorsport manager Todd Connolly said the while there was nothing official the company would like to be back at Le Sarthe. “At this stage there is nothing we can say in that reagard but obviously there's a lot of benfits in running a hybrid in  a race like Le Mans. he said. Connolly was speaking from in front of the Toyota stand at the recent Syd.. sorry Australian International Motorshow which featured a heavy motorsport presence including the Tokachi 24 hour winning Supra Hybrid.

HOLDEN SHOCK AT SYDNEY SHOW

Holden once again stole the show at the Australian International Motorshow at Sydney's Darling Harbour, but this time it was not a stunning locally built concept car but the Down Under debut of the Chevy Volt. The Volt has been seen plenty of times before, most recently from Paris, but the big news was that the car will be sold here in Australia as soon as 2012.

PEUGEOT PUMPS UP HYBRID POWER

Peugeot Sport presented a 908 HDi FAP equipped with  hybrid power at the final round of the 2008 Le Mans Series at Silverstone, this weekend. The company unveiled a 908 HDi FAP equipped with a hybrid power plant, featuring a kinetic energy recovery system. The 908HY was presented in a new, specific silver-grey livery and will provide a foretaste of what Peugeot’s next endurance racing challenger could resemble, although its use will depend on the regulations that will govern LMP 1 cars from 2009.

ACURA TO P1, HYBRID FOR PETITE LE MANS

The announcement just about everybody was expecting has come at the ALMS round at Detroit with the news that Acura will move up to the LMP1 class for 2009. DeFerran Motorsports and Paton Highcroft Racing will each field cars next season in a big boost to the class which is currently dominated by Audi. The two teams will each field an Acura ARX-02a prototype sports cars, currently being developed by Honda Performance Development (HPD), in the most advanced and technically challenging class of the American Le Mans Series.
