Jules Bianchi scored his first GP2 Asia win today after taking the lead at the start, suffering race-long pressure from pole sitter Romain Grosjean, and in spite of a red flag. Davide Valsecchi finished third giving Team AirAsia a podium finish on their race debut. It was an all-French front row today at Yas Marina Circuit for the first race of the 2011 GP2 Asia Series, with Grosjean ahead of Bianchi. But the Dams racer was slower to take off at the start and it was the Lotus ART man who took the lead before the first corner. Bianchi kept Grosjean at bay in the following corners while Valsecchi managed to keep P3. Behind, it was mayhem as Racing Engineering Dani Clos stalled on the grid from P4. Most of the field managed to avoid his car, but Team AirAsia’s Liuz Razia was unable to see Clos’ car until the very last second and barely had the time to turn to the right. He collided with the Spaniard’s car quite violently and went flying over it, crashing into the wall a few meters later. Bits and pieces were scattered all over the start/finish line and the race was red flagged in order to clean the track and retrieve the two badly damaged chassis along with Dams’ Pål Varhaug’s car - the Norwegian also a casualty of the crash.

Germany's Nico Hulkenburg raced through the Qatar night to grab pole position for the latest round of the GP2 Asia series. The young German ended Thursday night's qualifying session with a fastest lap of 1:35.741 to edge out the Campos team pairing of Sergio Perez and Vitaly Petrov. Perez, the youngest driver to win a GP2 race beat his Russian team-mate Vitaly Petrov's quickest lap in the very last seconds of the session. Petrov looked set for pole and had dominated for most of the session until Hulkenburg snatched the pole on his very last lap. A few seconds later, Vitaly Petrov crossed the finish line, but could not better Hülkenberg’s time while Perez also put i a last lap screamer to relegate his team-mate to P3. After the session Hulkenburg said he was delighted with his car and was comfortable with both the track and the night time running. "I... like the circuit: it’s very quick, very flowing which maybe suits my driving style. Generally, I like this kind of circuit. Yeah, I think we have a good (car) and a good setup for qualifying, I hope we can repeat that in the race as well." he said. "The night conditions are different: it’s something else and special. I like it!" Championship leader Kamui Kobayashi recovered in fourth place in his very last lap after a rather difficult session while Piquet’s Roldan Rodriguez finished fifth. Sakon Yamamoto, Javier Villa, Davide Valsecchi, Edoardo Mortara and Jérôme d’Ambrosio complete the Top 10. with GP2 Media Release

The passion of European and South American fans for the sport of Soccer is no secret, just take a look at the often over the top celebrations and sadly even outbreaks of tribal violence that mark the avid Soccer fan and you can see just how rabid they can become. So the question is can the tribal passions for your favourite “football” club be transferred to the world of motorsport.
