Queensland driver Shae Davies has capped off a sensational debut in the US-based F1600 Formula F Championship Series by winning the second and final race at New Jersey Motorsports Park. Davies’ success in Race 2 resulted in a clean sweep for the Queenslander after a convincing victory and new track record in Race 1. Finland’s Matias Köykkä completed a dominant 1-2 finish for Spectrum in a closely fought 18-lap race between the Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing team-mates. The two Spectrum drivers were again in a class of their own on the fast, 3.62km layout, gapping the Mygale of Bryan Herta Autosport driver and series leader Brandon Newey by almost 20 seconds at the finish.

Young Australian driver Shae Davies has taken an excellent win on debut for Spectrum Racing Cars in Race 1 of this weekend’s F1600 Formula F Championship Series round at New Jersey Motorsports Park. By doing so, Davies is the first Australian driver to win a US F1600 race and in an Australian-built car. The 22-year old Queenslander also set the fastest lap of the race and will start Sunday's second race from pole position. In what was a convincing display of speed from the Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing Spectrum 012H entries, Davies' team-mate Matias Köykkä started on pole and led the early stages of the race until a minor error shuffled the Finnish driver back to sixth place. When qualifying took place an hour later than scheduled after a wild storm lashed through the area, Köykkä took pole with a time of 1m23.362s from Davies' 1m23.494s to complete a convincing front row lock-out for Spectrum. Both drivers lapped 1.0s quicker than their nearest competitor, Bryan Herta Autosport Mygale driver Garett Grist.

The Porsche City Index Carrera Cup Australia will play an important role in the progression of young drivers with a new motorsport initiative, led by leading Carrera Cup racer Steven Richards. A former V8 Supercars stalwart, Australian Formula Ford ambassador and now Carrera Cup driver, Richards has used his ties with the Australian Formula Ford Championship and front-running V8 Supercars team Ford Performance Racing to establish a tiered program that will aid young drivers to climb the Australian motorsport ladder. As part of the initiative, the driver who wins the 2012 Australian Formula Ford Championship will receive a test in Steven Richards’ Laser Racing Porsche. If the Formula Ford Champion then enters the 2013 Porsche City Index Carrera Cup Australia championship, Porsche Cars Australia will waive the driver’s participation fee for the 2013 season, valued at $35,000. The initiative extends to drivers in the 2012 Porsche City Index Carrera Cup Australia championship, with the highest placed 2012 Carrera Cup driver aged under 30 awarded an evaluation drive with V8 Supercars team Ford Performance Racing; the outfit with which Richards has raced since 2007, including the 2012 Phillip Island and Bathurst endurance events.

The Australian Formula Ford Championship will join the Shannons Nationals for two rounds after the confirmation of the 2011 calendar. The series will take in the Nationals rounds at Sandown and Eastern Creek, marking a return to NSW after a two year absence. Phil Mahoney, Media Manager for the Championship told In Pit Lane that although the NSW laws that prohibit drivers under 16 year old from taking part still existed. The Championship was hoping that by the July round most of their younger drivers would have reached the minimum age. "We have a few young drivers but we think by the time of the round at Eastern Creek most of the guys will be 16." he said. Mr Mahoney said that any driver still under that age could apply for a special dispensation as had been granted to New Zealand Formula 3 driver Mitch Evens.

As Australian Motorsport goes into a bizarre Summer hibernation across the Tasman the New Zealand scene is already in full swing. A highlight of the season is the annual Toyota Racing Series. This year the battle will be between the young hot shots of New Zealand and a group of slightly older Aussies making the step up from Formula Ford. Initial interest will centre round 2010 Champion and Australian Formula 3 runner up, local driver Mitch Evans. The 16-year-old New Zealander will again be racing for Stephen Giles Auckland-based team alongside yet another talented young Kiwi in 16 year old Nick Cassidy from Auckland’s North Shore. Evans will compete for the first time in an identical car against 20 year old Aussie Scott Pye, the 2009 TRS Rookie Champion and current British Formula Ford champion. Pye, who made a strong impression in Britain this season, will be teamed with Wellington teenager Jamie McNee in the Australian-based ETEC team run by Trevor Shuemack. Both Evans and Pye will soon announce plans to race in major European single seaters championships later in 2011 and will have high expectations for the New Zealand races. Evans already has the support of Australian Formula One star Mark Webber and is expected to race for Webber's team in GP3 in 2011. Also confirmed for the series will be 18 year old Australian Nick Foster who finished third overall in this year’s Australian Formula Ford Championship. Two other young Australians will also test at Manfeild this week in preparation for the series. Jordan Oon, a 19 year old from Perth finished third in the 2010 Formula BMW Pacific series in Asia, while 19-year-old Jordan Skinner from Wallaroo in South Australia, has just returned home after winning the National Formula Ford 1600 title in Britain.
