MAD MARKO MAULS MARK AGAIN

Red Bull Racing advisor and President of the International Mark Webber appreciation society, Dr Helmut Marko has claimed that Mark Webber will "probably retire in 2012". Speaking in an interview with Australian television station ONE HD on the future of young Australian Daniel Ricciardo, Marko let slip about Webber's future. "As with the other Australian, he is probably going to retire in 2012," Marko said. "We need to find one of our juniors who can replace Mark Webber." The reference to Webber as "the other Australian" is consistent with Marko's known dislike of Webber. Marko said in the interview that Red Bull expected Daniel Ricciardo to improve in the Hispania Racing Team drive if he's to step up to a Toro Rosso or Red Bull in the future.

WICKENS LEADS CARLIN ONE-TWO AT SPA

Carlin team drivers Robert Wickens and Jean-Eric Vergne were the stars of the opening Formula Renault 3.5 Series race at the Spa-Francochamp circuit in Belgium. Saturday morning’s qualifying session in light aerodynamic setup was a lively affair on the fast and challenging circuit. Jean-Eric Vergne was the first to hold provisional pole, as Australia's Daniel Ricciardo lost his car at the Raidillon hitting the fence hard and bringing out a red flag. At the end of the session it was the turn of Robert Wickens and Albert Costa to shine. Driving in F1 Marussia Virgin Racing team colours, Wickens claimed his second pole of the season ahead of Costa, Vergne and KMP Racing’s Nelson Panciaticci. In the race itself Wickens took the lead at the la Source hairpin with Costa and Vergne trailing. Costa tried to snatch control of the race under braking at Combes but the Spaniard left it too late and a split second later left the track. The situation played into the hands of Vergne who now found himself in second place. The tone of the race was already set even in the opening laps, as  Wickens held court over teammate Jean-Eric Vergne.

ANOTHER AUSSIE ON THE WAY TO F1 ?

Australian race fans might soon have two locals to cheer on in Formula One after the stunning performance this week of Daniel Ricciardo. The Western Australian dominated both days of the 2010 young driver test at the Yas Marina circuit taking his Red Bull RB6 to a quickest time of 1:38.102, .700 faster than Renault driver Jerome D'Ambosio and over a second faster than Sam Bird in the McLaren. Ricciardo's time would have been fast enough to have put the Australian on pole for the series final race. The time was set however on light tanks, soft tyres and after four days of F1 rubber on the track. Red Bull head of race engineering Ian Morgan said that the team was delighted with Ricciardo's performance.

RICCIARDO GOES FOR RENAULT GOLD

Australian driver Daniel Ricciardo is facing the biggest weekend of his relatively short racing career. While most his home nation remains firmly fixated on a two make race series on one of the world's great tracks, or the exploits of Mark Webber in Japan. Ricciardo will be locked in battle with Mikhail Aleshin and Esteban Guerrieri for the prestigious 2010 Formula Renault 3.5 Series Drivers’ Championship and the tryout with Renault F1 Team that goes with it. The final in Barcelona will deliver the long-awaited verdict. While the Russian, the Australian and the Argentinean battle it out for the Drivers' title, the Spanish contingent, lead by Epsilon Euskadi’s Albert Costa, will also be hoping to shine in front of their home-crowd. While Aleshin has the advantage of arriving at Barcelona as championship leader, the 23-year old Muscovite is currently not enjoying the form of his rivals. Winner on three occasions, and with six podium finishes since the start of the season, the last two meetings, at Hockenheim and Silverstone, have been less impressive. With his last win this the season at Magny-Cours way back in June, Aleshin will need to return to his winning ways if he is to be sure of the title.
