FROSTY BACK IN V8 CHAMPIONSHIP HUNT
Mark Winterbottom is back in contention for the lead of the Australian V8 Supercar Championship Series after a dramatic win in an incident packed race at Phillip Island. Winterbottom grabbed the lead after team-mate Will Davison and current series leader Jamie Whincup were both taken out in a late race crash. Davison was hit from behind by the car of Tim Slade setting off the chain reaction that saw the series two main championship contenders out of the race. Ford dominated the podium with New Zealand driver Shane Van Gisbergen celebrating his new contract with Stone Brothers Racing with a second place. Tim Slade survived his tangle with Winterbottom to finish third. Once again the Team Vodafone Commodores were the class of the Holden runners, but with Whincup crashed out and Craig Lowndes hampered by a drive through penalty, it was HRT driver Garth Tander who brought the first Holden home in fourth place.

Audi have confirmed their entry in next year's Bathurst 12 hour race wit two R8 LMS cars from the Team Joest stable. As reported first by In Pit Lane last month, former Australian GT champion and regular Audi driver Mark Eddy will drive one of the cars and will be joined by Bathurst 1000 winner Craig Lowndes and fellow V8 supercar driver Warren Luff. Also confirmed is an all International line up headed by Hong Kong-based World Touring Car Championship driver Darryl O’Young, German sportscar driver Marc Basseng, and 21-year-old 2009 FIA GT3 European Champion Christopher Heis. The Audi will however find itself hamstrung by ridiculous "parity" penalties designed to appease local GT competitors in older 2009 spec cars. Under the rules the Audi and any other current spec GT3 cars will be forced to pit a minimum of 12 times compared with just nine for AGT regulars. A 50 kg weight penalty will also apply.

It was the stuff of which motor racing legends are made, Greg Murphy's perfect lap at Bathurst in 2003. Despite all the so-called advances in race car preparation, technology and tyres no one could top that remarkable lap. Until Today. Craig Lowndes propelled himself into the ranks of Mountain legends with a stunning two minutes, 06.8012 seconds lap to beat Murphy's time of 2:06.8594. "Everyone's been talking about it for a long time and finally now we've eclipsed it," Lowndes said. "It's great. Is there any more? You always say yes, but to actually go and do it is another thing." Murphy said he was surprised it had taken this long for his record to be broken but he was also quick to point out that it takes nothing away from his pole winning lap. "I did it seven years ago and I did it when I was 1.1 seconds quicker than the next guy when we'd done 2:07s for the first time on the Friday, that's why that's special.

A decade since they last teamed together Craig Lowndes and Mark Skaife got the band back together and won the Philip Island 500, the traditional lead up to the Bathurst 1000. Lowndes took the lead late in the race over team-mate Jamie Whincup to lead home Mark Winterbottom and Luke Youlden. Whincup and Steve Owen looked set to win after dominating most of the race but a major oil leak put the defending champion into the pits with only a handful of laps remaining. Third place for the Team BOC Commodore of New Zealand driver Jason Richards and Andrew Jones was a remarkable effort after a drive through penalty when a wheel nut came lose in the teams first stop. The Brad Jones led team used clever strategy to work their way back into the race, and Richards looked set to take a brilliant second until he ran slightly wide at the hairpin allowing Winterbottom into second.

After a qualifying process that was more complicated and even more boring than the recent Federal Election, the Team Vodafone, Triple Eight Commodore of Jamie Whincup and Steve Owen will start from pole for tomorrow's Phillip Island 500. Whincup, the defending V8 Supercar Champion, can thank his co-driver Owen for his pole position. Owen confirmed yet again that he should be in the main game with an all the way win in the first grid qualifying race. Jason Bargwanna in his Rock Racing Commodore was second after a great late race move on Holden Racing Team driver Garth Tander. Rick Kelly dominated the second race after making a great start to overhaul Jamie Whincup who blew the start and was swamped by Dick Johnson Racing's James Courtney. Whincup had to pit leaving Kelly to take the win from Craig Lowndes with Courtney third.

Holden have ended a three year drought at the famous Bathurst 1000 at Mount Panorama with a sweep of the podium led by Garth Tander & Will Davison. Tander and Davison started from pole but it was far from an all the way win with several challenges through the day. The victory was the second on the mountain for Tander but the first for Davison, the grandson of former multiple Australian Grand Prix winner Lex Davison and the cousin of 2009 Indy lights series runner up James. Earlier it had looked like a dream win for Gary Rogers Motorsport pair David Besnard and Greg Ritter.

It's official. The Triple Eight team of Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes will race a Holden in 2010. Speculation had been growing that the British owned team would switch to the General Motors marque after Triple Eight was dropped from official Ford support earlier this year. In a press conference held at Holden's Port Melbourne headquarters this morning, the announcement was made that the championship team would be making the switch to Fords for 2010, Holden Executive Director Sales, Marketing and Aftersales, Alan Batey said that “Holden has a long and proud history in motorsport that stretches back over 40 years and today's’s announcement is an exciting step into the next chapter.” “Our commitment and passion for motorsport has not wavered. It was no surprise that a Triple 8 Falcon crossed the line first in today's V8 Supercar championship race at Winton, what was surprising is that it wasn't Jamie Whincup. Craig Lowndes drove a superb tactical race to lead home his team-mate as Fords took the top three places. In the debut race for the new soft option tyres Lowndes and his team picked the perfect strategy, starting on the normal control tyre before switching to the new option tyre late in the race. The move allowed Lowndes to move from fifth though to the lead late in the race as Whincup who switched tyres on the opening lap of the race struggled for grip. "We spent about one and a half or two hours last night trying to figure out what the best strategy would be because no one knew." Lowndes said after the race. Third place went to Ford Performance Racing driver Steven Richards who also chose to switch to the option tyre late in the race and it nearly paid off as he just missed out on second place. Rick Kelly was the first Holden home in fourth place. Kelly started on the option tyre before switching to the control tyre late in the race. Despite missing the podium he was relatively happy with his race. "... when you finish fourth it’s always extremely frustrating because you're so close to getting a podium and it would have been fantastic to get the first ever podium for Kelly Racing here today. he said. “Not to worry - we should be happy with the job we've done and we’ll do our very best to make sure we're in the top 10 again tomorrow."

Australia's Motorsport community has joined the rest of the nation in supporting the victims of the terrible bushfires that as we go to press continue to race across Victoria. At this time over 180 people are confirmed dead with many others missing or seriously injured. Young Victorian Drifter Luke Jacobs and his parents Alan and Miros Jacobs as well as Luke's close friend BMX rider Nathan Charles all lost their lives at the Jacobs family home in Koornalla. “This is a horrible tragedy and they will be sorely missed.” said Drift Australia’s Wayne Boatwright. Several Victorian state rally competitors lost business and homes in the inferno that swept across the ranges at a stunning speed fanned by 46 degree temperatures and gale force winds. V8 Supercars Australia joined other professional sporting groups across the country in announcing a $100000 donation to the national appeal while V8 stars, Jamie Whincup, Craig Lowndes, Garth Tander and Will Davison gave their time in a nationally televised appeal that raised over $20 million. “As a sport we are doing what we can with this donation and the other initiatives announced today" said V8 Supercar Chairman Tony Cochrane. "We urge our fan base throughout Australia to contribute to this extremely worthwhile cause.” V8 Supercars Australia CEO Cameron Levick said that all proceeds from the annual test day at Winton Motor Raceway on March 9 would also be donated to the relief fund. Queensland Raceway, which has a test day on March 11, will donate all it's gate takings to the North Queensland Flood Appeal. Jamie Whincup said he was devastated by the fires in an area so close to where he grew up. “Personally I am in a state of shock - having grown up only 15 minutes from the Whittlesea Relief Centre; I enjoyed much of my recreational time in the King Lake district and have many of my relatives, friends and fans located in the fire affected area. “I have today personally donated $1,000 to the appeal and call upon my fellow V8 Supercar drivers to match that amount. If we can all do this that will equate to an additional $30,000 on top of the $100,000 V8 Supercars have donated as our sports governing body."
