WINSLOW WINS SATURDAY SANDOWN
British driver James Winslow set a new Sandown lap record on the final lap to hold off main rival Chris Gilmour to win the first race of this weekend's Australian Drivers Championship at Sandown. Gilmour led away early from pole sitter John Magro, but it wasn't long before Winslow grabbed the lead. Magro hung on for third with the first three all under the long standing lap record. Fourth place was a great result for Formula BMW Asia-Pacific graduate Steel Giulliania who led home his R-Tek team mate Josh Burdon. Queenslanders Ben Gersekowski and Roman Krumins rounded out the field. Only Seven cars fronted the start of the event, a clear indication of just how sad the state of open-wheel racing is in Australia.

New Zealand teenage sensation Mitch Evans has returned to form sweeping the Saturday action at round six of the Formula 3 Australian Drivers Championship at Sydney's Eastern Creek. Evans took his fifth pole of the season and held out teammate Ben Barker to win the first sprint race under perfect conditions at the 3.9km circuit. It was Evans’ first win since round three at Phillip Island and elevated him to within one point of the championship leader (Barker) with Tweedie’s third place keeping him in contention, just a handful of points behind in third. “It was a good race and really works well for the point’s situation,” A confident Evans’ said after his return to the top of the results sheet.

Phillip Island VIC: Young New Zealand sensation Mitch Evans continued his domination of the Formula 3 Australian Drivers Championship at Phillip Island. Evans started from pole for Saturday's ten lap sprint but was beaten off the line by Sydney driver Tom Tweedie, in an older National class chassis. However Tweedie's moment of glory was fleeting as Evan's retook the lead on lap two and from then on was never headed. Tweedie hung on for second, almost 5-seconds behind, Barker battled his way past Gilmour on lap five and finished third – just missing out on second place after a mistake on the penultimate lap cost him an opportunity to catch Tweedie.

The fight for the 2009 Formula 3 Australian Driver’s Championship has reached a new level of intensity after two race wins under the Queensland sun lifted Tim Macrow to the joint-lead of the points race with Joey Foster. The ever growing outright battle between Englishman Foster and Victorian Macrow reached its zenith in race one this morning as the pair staged an almighty duel for the win. Macrow eventually fought off attack after attack by Foster to record the victory and then backed it up with a more straightforward drive in the second race to take out both 12-lap affairs, the first time he has ever won both races in an F3 round during his glittering career. A pair of seconds, coupled with his race one pole position, was enough to ensure that Foster retains a share of the championship lead as the Gold Star fight heads to Oran Park in just five days time.

Team owner, driver patron and former CAMS Gold Star winning driver Graham Watson has passed away after a brief battle with cancer. Watson who won the Australian Drivers Championship in 1986 was a prominent supporter of openwheel racing in Australia actively supporting several young drivers in their local careers. Most recently he had thrown his support behind young NSW driver Tom Tweedie in this years Australian F3 championship. Despite his illness Watson was alongside Tweedie at the opening round of the season on the streets of Adelaide. Watson was an integral part of the local openwheel scene, his roster of drivers reading like a who's who of local and international motorsport. Current Indy Racing League stars Scott Dixon and Will Power both drove for Watson in the early stages of their careers as did current F1 star Mark Webber, Le Mans endurance driver David Brabham, Brazilian Roberto Moreno and V8 Supercars star Craig Lowndes. The Australian Formula Three Association said that the loss of Watson was a huge blow to the community that surrounds the Gold Star championship, and will be felt around Australian Motorsport in general - such was his influence on so many drivers, teams and people working throughout the industry. The Association have announced plans to honour Watson at the next round of the championship to be held at Wakefield Park in conjunction with the Shannons Nationals on April 24 – 26. In Pit Lane passes on its sincere condolences to the family and many friends of a great friend of Australasian motorsport.

An engine drama in race one has cost Leanne Tander her chance at the 2008 Australian Drivers Championship for the CAMS Gold Star despite winning the weekend's F3 feature race at Tasmania's Symmons Plains. With Tander out of the first race the title went to English driver James Winslow. Winslow wrapped up the title by winning race one on the final lap after a rain shower made the 2.4km Symmons Plains circuit slippery and cost race leader Stuart Kostera the win. “It is just unbelievable. After the year I have had I don’t know quite what to feel. It hasn’t sunk in yet,” he said. “I knew that Leanne was out of the race but I was so determined to win the championship in race one I pressed on as hard as I could. That’s why I challenged Kostera when he passed me because I wanted to win to make sure of it.” Winslow has battled for funding all year and at the earlier Phillip Island round had told In Pit Lane that he might not even make it to Tasmania.
