A news conference at Daytona Beach this Thursday morning Australian time, looks set to signal the end of the American Le Mans Series. Although reported as a merger, the announcement will see NASCAR take total control of the ALMS including the purchase of their two main racetracks, Sebring and Road Atlanta. The new combined series is expected to kick off in 2014 to give ALMS teams time to sell their current cars and to fulfil an existing contract with the ACO, organisers of the Le Mans 24 hour race. It is believed that the new series will see the lower tech Daytona Prototypes replace the International LMP cars as the series leading class. Some sort of merger involving the successful GTE class from the ALMS will see those cars continue to race, possibly alongside Grand-Am's existing GT class. Grand-Am officials recently attended the World Endurance Championship round at Silverstone for talks with WEC and ACO officials. The death of the American Le Mans series is sad day for lovers of international sportscar racing, the series brought some of the world's best cars and teams to North America, and races like the Sebring 12 hour race and the Petite Le Mans have become major International events in their own right.

Taking the next big step to bringing natural gas to the American Le Mans Series, Patrick Racing has chosen Michigan-based Katech Engineering as its engine builder for the American Le Mans Series Prototype Challenge Class (LMPC) cars starting in the 2013 season. "This is a key step forward for the program," said Patrick Racing's Jim McGee, who is heading the technical and engineering management for the historic program. "Katech offered us exactly what we needed, drawing on their expertise with the ALMS series, its teams, owners and demands. As the builders of the Chevrolet LS3 engine currently used in the LMPC cars, Katech brings a level of knowledge that offers a perfect match to partner with us for this new class of natural gas-powered engines." Stephen Chue, President and Technical Director of Katech, welcomed the announcement and looks forward to his team taking on the project. "We are honored to be a part of this historic initiative," said Chue. "As consumers struggle with heightened fuel prices and being held hostage by off-shore suppliers, the move to natural gas is going to be significant--and our Katech team is ready to prove its viability and reliability. Our mission is to illustrate the relevance of developing natural gas applications in motorsports to what we drive every day."

Audi have created motorsport history by becoming the first manufacturer to take a hybrid powered car to victory in the world's leading sports car race, the 24-hour of Le Mans. The team's number one R18 e-tron quattro driven by Andre Lotterer, Marcel Fassler and local driver Benoit Treluyer won the classic event for the second year in a row. They finished one lap ahead of team-mates Alan McNish, Tom Kristensen and birthday boy Dindo Cappello. It was perfect one, two, three finish for the German marque with the non-hybrid R18 Ultra of Oliver Jarvis, Marco Bonanomi and Mike Rockenfeller completing the podium. For Audi Motorsport boss Dr. Wolfgang Ulrich, the podium lockout was another significant milestone in his team's remarkable Le Mans history.

Although they won't be at Spa for round two of the World Endurance Championship the Toyota TS030 hybrid will be a the track this weekend. The team will complete a functionality test of its new chassis at the Magny-Cours circuit in France. Following the accident at Paul Ricard on 4 April, which damaged the monocoque of the first TS030, the team has worked hard to accelerate production of a second car. This will be completed directly before transportation to the one-day functionality test. A total of seven test days were cancelled in April as a result of the testing accident, giving the team no opportunity to validate the aerodynamic and hybrid system specifications intended for its first race. So the team had no choice but to miss the WEC Six Hours of Spa-Francorchamps event, which takes place on 3-5 May. Yoshiaki Kinoshita, Team President: “I would like to express my thanks to the staff members at Toyota Motorsport GmbH who have worked so hard to deliver our second monocoque ahead of schedule. Now we have a very intense testing programme to prepare for Le Mans, beginning with an initial functionality test to shakedown our systems.”

British sportscar drivers Richard Westbrook and Oliver Gavin will pay tribute to countryman Dan Wheldon at this weekend’s Armor All Gold Coast 600. Wheldon tragically passed away following an IndyCar accident in Las Vegas last weekend. He was scheduled to race alongside James Courtney at the Surfers Paradise street circuit this weekend. Both Westbrook and Gavin are life long friends and rivals of their countryman Wheldon, with all three members of the exclusive British Racing Drivers Club. Westbrook and Gavin will unveil special visor stickers in memory of Wheldon in pit lane at the Surfers Paradise street circuit at 9.30am local Queensland time. All BRDC members present at this weekend’s event will carry the special visor stripe stickers as a tribute to Wheldon. They are Westbrook, Gavin, Andy Priaulx, Emanuele Pirro, Gil de Ferran, Marino Franchitti, Ryan Briscoe, Richard Lyons and Darren Turner. Westbrook will partner Todd Kelly in the #7 Jack Daniel’s Commodore at the Armor All Gold Coast 600, while Gavin will drive alongside Greg Murphy in the #11 Pepsi Max Commodore. Just when it looked like Audi was set to dominate practice & qualifying fir the 2011 Le Mans 24 hours, along came Stephane Sarrazin. With half an hour of the first session remaining, Sarrazin grabbed provisional pole position with a lap of 3’27’’033. And with a strong chance of rain for tonight's final session it may well be good enough to give Peugeot the coveted pole position. Earlier in the day Audi dominated the opening practice session with all three R18s at the top of the time sheets. The team, which had set the fastest times in the April test session looked set to continue it's advantage over the Peugeot but that was until Sarrazin's last minute charge.

Peugeot Sport have unveiled their challenger to retake the Le Mans 24 hour from arch-rival Audi with the new 908. Although visually similar to the original 908 908 HDi FAP, the new car has been radically changed to meet the new LMP1 regulations of event organisers the ACO. The 908 most notably features the so-called shark's fin engine-cover appendix which has sadly been mandated by the new rules. Once again it is a closed-cockpit car, but now features four identical sized wheels as pioneered by Nick Wirth with the ALMS HPD LMP1 two years ago. The new car has an all new engine, a 550-horsepower, 3.7-litre V8 HDi FAP diesel engine.
