HAIL TO THE GREAT CARUSO

21. June 2009

HAIL TO THE GREAT CARUSO

Former Australian Formula 3 star Michael Caruso has broken through for his first ever V8 Supercar win at Darwin's Hidden Valley Raceway. In a virtuoso performance Caruso took the lead in the race on lap eight and despite challenges from the more experienced Craig Lowndes and Alex Davison held on to the end. Davison stormed through the field coming from 13th place to finish second to Caruso after a late race change to the softer compound sprint tyres. Caruso's win was another triumph for former racer, Melbourne car dealer Gary Rogers who has made something of a speciality of taking young drivers from supporting categories and turning them into top V8 drivers. “I’m just really stoked but I don’t think there has been enough time yet to really feel the emotion. said Caruso. Davison's second place was also his best ever V8 Supercar finish. The Falcon driver stayed out on the control tyres until his last pit stop late in the race. With the rest of the field, including Caruso battling with wearing rubber, Davison raced through the field and almost took his first victory. "I just kept plugging away and I had no idea what position we were in until I was in about third or something. he said. “Before today I wasn’t that keen on this soft tyre thing but obviously I’ve changed my mind on that now." Davison the Grandson of former Australian Grand Prix winner Lex Davison and cousin of Indy Lights driver James admitted that the transition from GT cars in Europe to the big heavy V8 Supercars had been difficult. "It's been pretty hard for me coming from Porsches and it requires a totally different set up and I’ve had to erase all that from my memory and I’ve just been learning every round.” Third place went to Team Vodafone diver Craig Lowndes. Lowndes, known around the paddock as "The Kid" celebrated his 35th birthday today. Lowndes was one of the drivers to benefit from a late race safety car that came out inexplicably to attend to the slowing car of Tim Slade. Slade had stopped briefly with overheating problems but managed to return to the pits under his own (dare I say it) steam. CAMS stewards have launched an enquiry into just why the safety car was deployed so rapidly. Rick Kelly was next just in front of Garth Tander who was furious after the race with backmarkers, especially young Victorian driver Dale Wood. “We got stuffed up at the restart by Dale Wood and that hurt as Lowndes got past and ended up third. “Wood needs to go back to Formula Ford because he’s seriously out of his depth,” Tander said. “I was caught amongst a few cars at the restart that were coming through, so it was just a matter of getting through that and trying to hold position with Murph and McConville behind me.” said Wood who finished down in 26th place. Championship leader Jamie Whincup who won Saturday's first race finished back in 10th place after starting the race 13th. Whincup however extended his lead in the series after second place man Will Davison had late race drama with Falcon driver James Courtney and finished 18th. The V8 Supercar circus will now move east across the top end of Australia to race at the new Townsville circuit in North Queensland  on July 10-12.

I CAN FEEL PR SPIN COMING ON

I CAN FEEL PR SPIN COMING ON

V8 Supercars Australia (VESA) have been unable to attract manufacturer support for their safety car programme due to their insistence on the carrying of alcohol sponsorship. Nissan Australia withdrew their support for the safety car programme after the company's Nissan GTR was adorned with logos from Queensland beer brand XXXX Gold. It was only six months into a two-year contract. An approach to HSV to use their W427 Supercar was also refused again due to the beer sponsorship issue. The new safety car unveiled at Darwin's Hidden Valley Raceway is a Holden Commodore supplied by suspension and car repair company Pedders. In what is clearly a public relations move to try and stave off criticism of the Beer sponsorship, the car will carry road safety messages and feature in XXXX Gold's new ‘Know When to Slow Down’ campaign. A V8SA statement said Pedders will support the “generic” Safety and Course cars “before a further announcement in the coming weeks regarding a unique concept for the XXXX Gold Pedders Safety Car Program”. XXXX Gold has taped a 30-second television advertisement with V8 drivers Jamie Whincup, Garth Tander, Mark Winterbottom and Greg Murphy. According to XXXX GOLD Category Director, Andrew Coates, said that “Know When To Slow Down not only works from a V8 Supercar and Safety Car perspective, but it’s a great fit for a mid-strength product.” He said that the campaign echoes the brand’s mateship values and is consistent with the company's V8 Mates promotional theme. Mr Coates said the Safety Car and TV commercial will allow XXXX Gold to spread the really important message about slowing down, taking responsibility and making sensible decisions. Meanwhile after two weeks of internal turmoil, VESA have finally had some good news to report with the announcement the the taxpayers of the Northern Territory will continue to support VESA's mid Winter flight from the cold for another nine years. V8 Supercar supremo and colourful Broadway impresario Tony Cochrane told a delighted media that their annual Baramundi fishing expedition will continue. “It’s no secret that Darwin... is a favourite amongst our drivers, teams and our staff,” he said. “Year after year we can’t wait to get back to the special feeling of the Top End and this particular weekend. Territory Chief Minister Paul Henderson said that the event was loved by Territorians and visitors alike. “The V8 Supercars weekend has become a great celebration of our Territory lifestyle – starting with the truck convoy through the city on Thursday and ending with great music on Sunday night – this year with the Presets,” he said. Mr Henderson claimed that the race injects more than $8 million into the local economy.

FIA RESPONDS TO FOTA THREAT: SEE NO EVIL, HEAR NO…

FIA RESPONDS TO FOTA THREAT: SEE NO EVIL, HEAR NO…

The FIA have released a terse press release in response to the announcement that FOTA teams including Ferrari, Red Bull, McLaren, BMW Sauber and Brawn GP would stage a rival Formula One series in 2010. The simple 110 word statement reads: The FIA has noted the latest press statement from FOTA. The FIA is disappointed but not surprised by FOTA’s inability to reach a compromise in the best interests of the sport. It is clear that elements within FOTA have sought this outcome throughout the prolonged period of negotiation and have not engaged in the discussions in good faith. The FIA cannot permit a financial arms race in the Championship nor can the FIA allow FOTA to dictate the rules of Formula One.  The deadline for unconditional entries to the 2010 FIA Formula World Championship will expire this evening.  The 2010 FIA Formula One World Championship entry list will be announced tomorrow. Meanwhile here in beautiful GirtbySea, Victorian tourism and special events apologist Tim Holding has announced to an eager and bewildered mainstream media that the Albert Park GP will go ahead as planned no matter what happens in Europe. Tourism and Major Events Minister Tim Holding said the contract with Mr Ecclestone ensures a Formula 1 Grand Prix takes place every year up until 2015.  "This is part of the pushing and shoving that Formula 1 is well known for,'' Mr Holding said.  Speaking to the Murdoch media owned Herald Sun Holding said "We know these negotiations will continue and we also know that we will get a good outcome. Let's give the negotiations that are currently underway an opportunity to run their course.''  Mr Holding left the media conference on his magical flying carpet to return to Asgard.

PERCAT TOPS TOP END FORMULA FORD CLASH

19. June 2009

Austraian Formula Ford Championship leader Nick Percat has topped the time sheets in today's Formula Ford practice sessions at Darwin's Hidden Valley Raceway. Percat posted a convincing seven tenths of a second lead over his nearest rival, Chaz Mostert.  "I'm surprised we managed to quicker this afternoon," Percat said. "There's obviously a lot more heat around this afternoon and I would have thought our tyres would have suffered as a result but they held out," he added. "I'm really happy with the setup I'm running at the moment so I don't think we'll do much in the way of changes between now and qualifying ... I'll just rely on some fresh rubber for more speed tomorrow." Looking for answers to explain the time gap to Percat, second fastest Chaz Mostert was left scratching his head after today's sessions. "I feel like I'm pushing it to the limit but the times just aren't reflecting that," a dejected Mostert said. "Six tenths (the gap to Percat) is a lot of time to make up ... I'm really not sure where we're losing the time at the moment but am confident we can make some positive changes before tomorrow's qualifying session." Third quickest today was young New Zealander Richie Stanaway. Stanaway, fresh from his maiden Australian Championship race win at Symmons Plains is relishing the technical Darwin circuit. "Obviously I'd like to be a bit quicker but it's such a great track to drive you can easily forget you're out there to do a job!" he said. "I'm still learning the track as it's my first time here and there's a few improvements we can make to our suspension settings before tomorrow so I'm sure I can go quicker as the weekend goes on ... Tasmania was a real confidence booster for the team so now we just have to find the speed we enjoyed there and I'm sure we can repeat that performance." Percat's Sonic Racing teammates Mitch Evans and Geoff Uhrhane rounded out the top five in today's practice and will no doubt be sneaking a look at their comrade's data tonight to see if there's a way they can haul in the championship leader in tomorrow's qualifying. Qualifying for the fourth round of the Genuine Ford Parts Australian Formula Ford Championship takes place tomorrow morning at 9.25am, and is followed by race one at 1.20pm. Races two and three will be held on Sunday at 9.45am and 12.45pm respectively. Races one and two will be televised live from Darwin on the Seven Network around Australia. Check your local guides for details. Source: Formula Ford Association Media Release

FORMULA ONE SPLIT: CRISIS, SHOCK, HORROR, SCANDAL ! Pictures page 3

FORMULA ONE SPLIT: CRISIS, SHOCK, HORROR, SCANDAL ! Pictures page 3

Formula One teams led by Ferrari and other major manufacturers have called the bluff of FIA President Max (hurts so good) Mosley and announced that they will run a breakaway series beginning next year. At a meeting held at the Renault F1 factory in Oxfordshire the teams refused to back down on their demands for changes for next years regulations. Ferrari, McLaren, Renault, Toyota, BMW Sauber, Brawn GP, Red Bull Racing and Toro Rosso have therefore declined to enter the FIA Formula One Championship for 2010. The announcement, on the eve of what looks set to be the final British GP at Silverstone, seriously ups the ante in the multi-billion dollar stare-down between the teams and the FIA. In a statement issued by FOTA, the teams said that there was no room for further compromise. "It has become clear that the stables cannot continue to make compromises on the fundamental values of the sport," they said. "The teams have no other alternative but to begin to prepare for a new championship which reflects the values of the competitors and their sponsors. According to the statemant the new series will have a transparent governing body, one single set of rules, encourage new entrants, and would better listen to the fans' wishes. Just what role, if any, Bernie Ecclestone may play in this is not yet clear. Despite the posturing of both the teams and the FIA, the real power broker is still Bernie. It is he who controls the sports commercial rights and the valuable TV deals that provide so much of the sport's income. Publicly at least, Ecclestone has shown qualified solidarity with his old mate Max, but Bernie is Bernie and friendship will count for nothing if there's a quid involved. And with literally millions of quids involved expect Bernie to jump wherever it's best for Bernie.

MORE POWER FOR PENSKE

Australian driver Will Power will return to the drivers seat this year with Roger Penske announcing that Power will drive at five races in 2009. Power raced for Penske at the start of the year filling in for regular driver Helio Castroneves who was facing serious tax evasion charges. Castroneves returned to the team after he was acquitted of all charges leaving Power without a regular drive. Speaking before Sunday's NACAR Sprint Cup race at Michigan International Speedway Penske said the team was looking at some road and street courses for Power over the final 11 races of the IndyCar season. Power finished sixth on the streets of St. Petersburg before a fine second at Long Beach, he returned to Indianapolis for the 500 where he finished fifth. In spite of missing several rounds Power remains eighth in this years Indycar Championship.

PEUGEOT WINS LE MANS: BRABHAM BREAKS THROUGH

French manufacturer Peugeot has broken through to take it's first Le Mans 24 hour race since 1993 and for the second time the name Brabham has gone into the record books. The team of Marc Gene, Alex Wurz and Australia's David Brabham led from early in the race holding on to win from the popular local team of Sebastian Bourdais, Stephane Sarrazin and Frank Montagny Audi who had dominated the race for the last decade had a tough weekend despite a finishing third. Alan McNish, Dindo Cappello, and Tom Kristenson survived a number of mechanical problems to make it to the finish six laps down on the leader. A number of incidents studded the race, the biggest being early in the morning involving Pescarollo Peugeot driver Benoit Treluyer. Treluyer crashed after taking over the car from Simon Pagenaud who pitted  with smoke coming out of the car. The Peugeot returned to the race after repair but Trulyer made it only as far as just after the Dunlop Bridge when his Peugeot left the road and struck the barrier at high-speed. The car was totally destroyed in the accident. The driver was taken to hospital, shaken but without major injury. Japanese driver Seiji Ara was also lucky to escape injury after his LMP2 Porsche Spyder had a big crash late in the rate heading into the playstation chicane on the fast Mulsanne straight. LMP2 was won by the Team Essex Porsche Spyder of Casper Elgaard, Emmanuele Collard and Kristian Poulsen. The small GT1 field was dominated by the Corvette team in their final ever GT1 appearence, Johnny O'Conell, Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia taking the win from the privately entered Luc Alphand Adventures Corvette of Xavier Maassen, Julien Jousse & Yann Clairay. O'Connell's team-mate Sacha Massen led late in the race but mechanical failure cost him any chance. GT2 was a Ferrari benefit with the Risi Competizioni car of Jamie Melo, Mika Salo and Pierre Kaffer taking the win.

SENSATIONAL SARRAZIN AS PEUGEOT TAKES LE MANS POLE

Peugeot will start the 2009 Le Mans 24 hour race from pole following a sensational last gasp qualifying lap by Stephane Sarrazin. Audi looked set to take pole after dominating free practice Wednesday evening with Allan McNish setting the fastest time. But as the clock headed to the midnight close of session Sarrazin reeled off a spectacular 3m22.888s just seven tenths quicker than McNish to give the French Automaker it's third straight pole position. The McNish Audi breaks up a Peugeot dominated front grid. The car of Nicolas Minassion. Pedro Lamy and Christian Klein will start from their ahead of the “borrowed” Peugeot of the Pescarollo team led by Jean-Christophe Boullion. LE MANS: THE GREATEST RACE

LE MANS: THE GREATEST RACE

It's all happening, the countdown has begun for the greatest spectacle in International motorsport, forget F1, ignore the Indy 500, don't even consider the Bathurst 1000, the greatest race in all motorsport is without a shadow of a doubt Le Mans. For the first time since 1984 Australian television audiences will have the chance to see the race live, well some of it anyway. TEN's new ONE HD sports channel will bring Aussie viewers the race live from 10.30 p.m. Saturday night with live coverage going through until 2.00AM when the network crosses to NASCAR Qualifying. The coverage continues from 6.30AM till 10.00AM with the final few hours also covered live from 8.30PM till 11.10PM when coverage of the MotoGP begins. For most Australians Le Mans is an abstract concept, not since the early eighties has there been any real mainstream media coverage of the greatest race. Even that proud purveyor of obscure sports everywhere cable TV confined their coverage to a scant hour of highlights often weeks after the race. Of course we on In Pit Lane tried our best to keep the spirit of Le Mans alive. In 2004 I attended my first Le Mans, it was everything I had expected and way, way more. The efficiency and friendliness of the ACO officials is a long way from the indifference and arrogance of the average Aussie racetrack. As I've said on the show before, it was easier to get into Le Mans and do our job than it is to get through the tunnel at Phillip Island for a round of the Victorian State Series. The media centre is remarkable, every table with its own monitor, a lockable cage for your laptop and a steady stream of information all delivered with a smile from a crew who are not only professional but knowledgeable and quite rightly proud of their event. It makes a big difference from some media centres at a typical V8 Supercar event when any request for information on a support event is met with a mixture of confusion and utter contempt. The track itself is suburb, sadly not all of it is accessible to the average spectator but there's plenty of good places to view from. The esses down from the famous Dunlop bridge is a favourite, especially on Saturday night when you can stand on the hill and watch the cars on one side and them flip around to the bands at the annual rock concert. Of course any trip to France must include food and wine and Le Mans is no disappointment there either.
