A who's who of Australian motorsport has signed a petition in support of improvements to the Eastern Creek circuit over the recently announced Homebush Olympic Park Sydney Street Race. Racing legends led four-time Australian Touring Car champions Allan Moffat (a member of the ARDC which currently runs the circuit) and Bob Jane are among the signatories on a petition presented to the NSW government calling for greater investment at Eastern Creek. Other signatories include former touring car champions Colin Bond, John Bowe and Glenn Seton, as well as Bathurst 1000 winners John French, John Harvey, Barry Seaton and Bob Holden.

A record entry for the VACC Historic Sandown from November 7-9 this year, with over 300 entries well ahead the official closing date of October 27. The arrival of 15 Formula 5000 entries from New Zealand means that up to 25 of the spectacular V8-engined open wheelers from the 1970s will now race at the meeting. Nearly 50 Historic Touring Cars, including eight Ford Mustangs, seven Torana XU-1s and two Chrysler Chargers, will shake the Sandown grandstand, while the 17 Group A and Group C touring cars entered so far include an exciting mix of Torana A9Xs, BMWs, Nissans, a Volvo and a Ford Sierra from the late 1970s and 1980s.

As expected the announcement of the V8 Supercar street race at Sydney's Olympic Park is official. According to a story on the V8 Supercar website the announcement to be made Monday afternoon AEST will announce a five-year contract with the New South Wales Government to stage the race around the former Olympic precinct in Homebush, Sydney. The ‘Sydney 400’ will be held in December 2009 and will become the Grand Finale of the 2009 V8 Supercar Championship. V8SA are claiming that a crowd “in excess of 150,000” will attend over the three days of next year’s event.

The Australian Motor Sport Foundation (AMSF) announced today that Luke Ellery (18, VIC), Nathan Morcom (16, NSW) and CAMS Aussie Young Gun, David Whitmore (16, NSW) will join South Australian Scott Pye in the 2009 CAMS Rising Star squad. The successful drivers have had to endure an intensive selection process, which included an interview with an AMSF panel, a selection camp at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), an evaluation day in Formula Fords at Winton Raceway and a psychology analysis session with leading motor sport psychologist Noel Blundell. “The drivers were tested both physically and mentally during the selection process and they should all be proud of how they performed,” said AMSF Projects and Operations Officer, Brock Rogers.

A mixed weekend for Australian driver Daniel Ricciardo in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup series round at Estoril. Ricciardo won the weekends first race to extend his lead in the series but finished with only one point in the second race as arch rival Valtteri Bottas took the win and a one point lead in the fight for championship. Ricciardo's race one win was a welcome return to form for the young Aussie who had struggled in recent rounds as Bottas closed the gap in the title chase.

ING Renault driver Fernando Alonso was the surprise winner of the inaugural Singapore F1 Grand Prix. Held under lights the world's first night time Formula One race went off without a hitch for the organisers but the same couldn't be said for Ferrari with both Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen striking major problems in the race. Massa had led the race early but a disastrous pitstop which saw him leave before the refuelling hose had been removed cost him any chance of a win.

Australian driver Daniel Ricciardo has claimed pole position for the first race of this weekend's Estoril round of the Formula Renault 2.0 series. In a closely fought Super Pole battle Tobias Hegewald (Motopark Academy) took the initial lead, with Kuba Giermaziak in second, as several drivers opted to bide their time in the pits. Richard Singleton (Hitech Junior Team) cranked things up with eight minutes to go. Valtteri Bottas, however, wasted no time in ousting him from first position. With just over three minutes to go, Daniel Ricciardo beat Bottas's time, just as Albert Costa ran into the safety barrier, causing the red flags to be brought out.

Emboldened by the apparent early success of Singapore's first ever night Grand Prix, Bernie Ecclestone now plans to pressure Japan into a night event as well. Speaking to the BBC, Ecclestone was asked about whether he wanted to see more night races and he said that if they were in Asia then yes. “We're going to try to get Japan to do it.” he said. “I hope when people see Singapore they realise it wasn't a stupid idea.“ he told BBC Five Live.
