NO DECISION ON MOTORSPORT FUTURE, YET! Ford Australia have announced their decision to withdraw from manufacturing in Australia with both Geelong and Broadmeadows plants to close in October 2016. Rumours of the withdrawal have been rife within the local car industry for several years now, with most talk centring around the future of the iconic Ford Falcon. The move comes after years of declining sales for the Falcon and the failure of other nameplates to capture the market. Bob Graziano, president and CEO of Ford Australia, told the media that the company had lost $144 mil. Last year alone making a loss of $600 mil. Over the past five years. Mr Graziano confirmed that the Falcon nameplate would cease when production of the car ends in 2016. He sais the the decision to end local production followed a comprehensive review process of the companies operations in Australia. In it's media staement Ford said: "Given the changing dynamics of the auto industry, a number of business scenarios were reviewed during the past year to determine next steps for Ford’s Australian business....

New Zealand driver Shane Van Gisbergen has returned to V8 Supercar racing in style with an impressive pole position for Saturday's first leg of the Clipsal 500. After surprising the V8 Supercar community by announcing his decision to quit V8 racing for 2013, "The Giz" infuriated Ford fans, and his former team Stone Brothers Racing, by moving to the smaller Tekno Autosports team and Holden. In front of a massive Friday crowd of just under 68,000, the 21 year old Kiwi again showed why he is considered one of the best in the business with a scintillating lap in the top ten shootout. "All day we have been in the top five or there abouts and it felt amazing," Van Gisbergen said. "The car and the team atmosphere is really good, I'm really enjoying myself and just going racing, my phone's broken so I haven't read any media at all, it's been great, so I'm just going out and doing it.

New Zealand driver Shane Van Gisbergen has announced his return to V8 Supercar Racing less than two months after announcing his intention to quit. Van Gisbergen will drive a Holden for the Gold Coast based Tekno Motorsport team alongside Jono Webb. The 23 year old shocked the V8 Supercar community with his announcement late last year that he was leaving the sport due to personal reasons. He said today though that while he had walked away from V8s he had never permanently retired from the sport. “I was never retired, retirement is final and that was never my consideration. I said I was leaving the sport for a bit. I’ve considered my options and this is the next chapter in my career.” The news of Van Gisbergen's sudden return is sure to infuriate his former boss at Stone Brothers Racing Ross Stone who released the Kiwi from a recently signed three year contract.

With the wrangling over their television rights continuing, and faced with falling ratings and crowd numbers, you might think that V8 Supercars Australia might be keen to make as many friends as possible in the wider media. However judging by the new terms and conditions imposed on those requiring media accreditation for the 2013 season, it would appear that VESA is intent on making coverage even harder and more restrictive. With accreditation opening for the 2013 season, the updated terms & conditions make for some very interesting and sometime concerning reading. First cab off the rank is this gem: "V8 Supercars only accredits publications and agencies: a) with a minimum circulation of 20,000 for magazines and 50,000 for newspapers" That one is bound to send a few shockwaves through the ranks of those at Australia's longest serving motorsport publication "Australian Auto Action" With a ACB audited circulation of only "10,370" per issue, Foges and the AAA crew will have to get used to the somewhat less rarified air of the Shannons Nationals Media Centre, as by my very basic maths they fall about 9630 short of the minimum requirement. Oh and whose figures are we using here? The independent Audit Bureaux of Australia or the notoriously unreliable "publisher's estimate"? If we are looking for audited, independent figures, then that pretty much rules out all those publications who are not a part of the ABA system.
