Glenn Seton made a winning return to South Australia’s Mallala Motor Sport Park and South Australian Bob Middleton wrapped up his fourth-consecutive Australian Supertruck title in the penultimate round of the Shannons Nationals.
Six categories took to Mallala for the ninth round of 2008, with Middleton one of three new national champions crowned over the weekend.
On his 64th birthday, Middleton continued his golden run in the Tankworld Australian Supertruck Nationals, winning the championship.
Middleton entered the weekend 10 points behind John Falk, but won all four races to take his fourth crown.
“I’m over the moon, it’s a nice little birthday present,“ Middleton enthused.
“We’ve worked hard all year for this and the guys have done a great job to bounce back after we lost a heap of points with mechanical problems in Perth.
“This weekend went really well from the outset; wrapping up our fourth straight championship here at home is a great feeling.“
Two-time Australian Touring Car Champion Seton won the S.A. Historic Touring Car Cup in his Ford Capri.
Contesting his first race meeting at Mallala since 1998, Seton won the first three races before charging from the rear of grid to finish third in the final behind Rob Vanderkamp (GT Falcon) and Robert Braune (Valiant Charger).
“I’ve really enjoyed racing at Mallala again,“ Seton said.
“We had some good battles over the weekend and the results went our way - hopefully it’s not another 10 years before I come back to race here next time!“
South Australian driver Steve Kwiatkowski dominated the Supaloc Saloon Car Series proceedings, taking three wins from three starts in his Ford Falcon.
Holden drivers Shawn Jamieson and John Goodacre were second and third for the weekend, while Kwiatkowski extends his championship lead with one round remaining.
“It’s been a sensational weekend, the car didn’t miss a beat and we were able to control each race,“ Kwiatkowski said.?
“Coming away with three wins is excellent in terms of the championship, too, hopefully we can finish the job at Sandown in a couple of weeks.“
Michael Tancredi and Dean Croswell won the inaugural Southern Star Windows Commodore Cup Endurance Challenge, moving Tancredi into the series lead.
After finishing second in the two, 40-minute races, the pair inherited victory after post-race penalties were applied to Marcus Zukanovic and Gary Baxter in Race One, and Geoff Emery and Ross McGregor in Race Two.
Benjamin Porter made it back-to-back national titles, taking a clean sweep of BeanBagShop.com.au Formula Vee race wins.
Porter entered the final round with a 12-point lead and was too good, winning the weekend from Daniel Reinhardt and Michael Kinsella.
Despite a pair of slow starts, Darren Hossack held out Sam Zavaglia to win the Australian Superkart Championship in its 20th year.
With Zavaglia running second in the final race, Hossack needed to finish third, claiming the position on the last lap to snare the title by three points.
The final round of the 2008 Shannons Nationals will be held at Melbourne’s Sandown Raceway on 29-30 November.
