A massive crash in the closing stages of the Nationwide Cup race at Talladega has seen driver Eric McClure taken to hospital.
McClure hit the SAFER barrier head on at high speed but according to trackside workers he was conscious and talking to medical and rescue staff.
He was airlifted to a local hospital immediately without going to the trackside medical centre first.
According to a statement from NASCAR Media:
“Eric McClure, driver of the No. 14 Hefty®/Reynolds Wrap® Toyota, was transported to the University of Alabama at Birmingham hospital earlier this afternoon following a late race incident during the NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Talladega Superspeedway.
Eric is awake, alert and talking to family members. He is being kept overnight for further observation.
More updates will be released once they occur.”
Joey Logano won the race after a slipstreaming move past Sprint Cup team-mate Kyle Busch five laps into overtime.
Logano beat Busch to the finish line by just .034 seconds to win his second NNS race of the season and the 11th of his career.
Defending series champion Ricky Stenhouse Jr. was third and took over the points lead from Elliott Sadler.
