Series leader Matthew Brabham has set the early pace for the third round of the CAMS’ Victorian Formula Ford Championship at Sandown International Motor Raceway.
Brabham set a fastest lap of 1 min 15.9138 seconds to start from pole in Saturday afternoon’s first race.
The Mygale driver recorded an all away win to lead home Spectrum drivers Sam Power and Caleb Rayner.
Unlike the previous round held at Sandown, drivers were on their very best behaviour after a warning from the meeting’s driving standards officer Luke Ellery that a repeat of last meeting’s behaviour would not be tolerated..
Ellery warned drivers that officials would take a dim view of any incidents that brought out a full course yellow, or a red flag.
Fields in the Formula Fords, were large enough to be able to split the Formula Ford 1600 cars into their own race.
Scott Andrews in a Spectrum recorded an all away win from an impressive Adrian Lazzaro and Lachlan Marshall.
In other events at Sandown, Mitch Martin won a thrilling Formula Vee race ahead of Jack Flood and Heath Collinson.
Round three of the Victorian Sportscar Championship saw a great win to the Lamborghini Gallardo Trofero of Justin McMillan who just lead home Jim Manolios in his GT3 Corvette. Paul Whitmarsh in his Porsche GT2 was third.
Defending series champion Ted Huglin failed to start the race after gearbox problems in Qualifying with his Lamborghini Gallardo GT3.
Bob Nordlinger won the MG and invited British sports cars race in the absence of regular front runner Mort Fitzgerald. Nordlinger led home Mark O’Neill and Jason Holmes. Keith Ondarchie in a Triumph Stag was the first non MG home.
V8 power dominated the historic touring cars, as the Camaro of Tony Hubbard led all the way to lead home the Valiant Charger of Les Walmsley. Bill Trengrove in his Ford Mustang was third with Andrew Williams in the XU1 Torana back in fourth place.
V8 power was again to the fore in the Improved Production race with the 5.7 litre Commodore of Neil Crowe taking the chequered flag. Phillip Howe in his Commodore crossed the line in second place but a 20 second penalty relegated him to fifth position.
Gary Mackay in his indecently quick six cylinder Torana GTR XU1 was promoted into second place ahead of as the Mazda RX7 of Kelvin twist.
Rolf Mammers in his RX7 failed to finish after losing a rear wheel, thankfully the errant wheel was avoided with no damage to cars or injury to either Marshalls or Spectators.
Rod Raatjes continued his domination of the HQ Holden division with an all the way victory in their race. Ken Wright edged out John Wise for second place.
In the dice of the race, John (Spud) Wood passed Andrew McLeod on the last lap to take fourth.
The final race of the day was held in fading light for the Porsche 944 Challenge. Chris Lewis-Williams lead home Vince Misuraca and Ivan Klassen.
