Forget Australia’s fractured political scene, the factions of the Labor Party have nothing on the continued battle for the control of Production Car Racing in Australia.
The latest shot in the war is a brand new series for 2010 the Australian Endurance Championship for Production cars.
Four of Australia’s major race circuits have put an agreement in place to conduct the series which will be run under the auspices of the Australian Auto Sport Alliance (AASA).
The four tracks are: Eastern Creek Raceway in NSW, Phillip Island International Race Circuit and Winton Motor Raceway in Victoria and Queensland Raceway.
The new series which will conduct 4 x 6 hour races, will also produce the title of Australian 24 Hour Endurance Production Car Champion, based on the results of all four events.
The group have contracted Motor Racing Australia to co-ordinate the Series. Brian Walden from Motor Racing Australia was ecstatic that four of Australia’s largest motor racing venues had decided to join together in establishing the new series.
“This is great news for Production cars” he said. “It means competitors can build cars and have the ability to use them on multiple occasions throughout the year instead of just once per year.”
Endurance Production Car racing has had a long history in Australian as the fore runner to today’s Bathurst 1000 with the Armstrong 500 from Phillip Island. It also featured in highly successful events at Winton in the 80’s and Eastern Creek in the 1990’s.
“There are a number of people building cars for the series already and with a healthy field of Production cars already available it will be an exciting series.”Walden said.
A new innovation in the series will be the introduction of two Day/Night events one with the Winton round and the other at the Queensland Raceway round. It will be a unique opportunity for competitors to race at night.
According to the promoters the main attraction of the series over similar CAMS backed series is the ability for non-dry brake fuel system cars to also compete.
Organisers say that the non-dry brake fuel systems will significantly reduce the cost of competing for competitors.
The Series has made an arrangement with AVE Television to produce a 2 hour show of each round to go to air on the Speedweek show on SBS and followed by Fox Sport’s Inside Speed the next week.
The series will be based on Production Car rules which allows over 100 models of cars to compete.
