DTM CONFIRMS SHANGHAI FINALE FOR 2010

DTM CONFIRMS SHANGHAI FINALE FOR 2010

The final round of the 2010 DTM will be held on the streets of Shanghai. The race was confirmed today by the DTM promoters ITR at a media conference at the Euro Speedway at Lausitz.

Hans Werner Aufrecht, chairman of the board for ITR said: “The contract is ready now, and we will be there on the 26-28 November this year.

The move to China comes with the support of DTM manufacturers Audi and Mercedes who are both keen to use the race to promote their brands to the growing Chinese auto market.

“We know what is happening in the Chinese market. The car market will be, in the near future, the number one in the world. said Mr Aufrecht.

“That is the reason why we have built this platform for our manufacturers to showcase their products in this very important market.”

With BMW joining the series and rumours of future entries from companies like Nissan, the DTM will be hoping that the move into China will attract even more manufacturer interest.

Mercedes motorsport boss Norbert Haug is delighted to be going back to China, especially as Mercedes won the last time the DTM raced there in 2004.

“I remember fondly the DTM race there in 2004. It was the first ever street race in Shanghai. I would be very happy if we, as we did six years ago, could repeat the victory. China is the third biggest market for Mercedes-Benz and as such is very important for us.“

The race will be promoted by the Brilliance Culture Group, who ran the exhibition race for the DTM on a street circuit in the heart of Pudong in 2004.

The 2010 race will be held on a new street circuit about five minutes from the original site and close to plenty of public transport.

The actual design and site for the race has not yet been announced and it will be subject to approval by the German Motorsport Authority (DMSB) after a visit to Shanghai in July.

DMSB technical delegate Christian Schacht said: “It is not possible to give full details of the race yet, because we want to make sure that we do everything to make this a proper race to the standards we have when we are in Europe.

It could be a crowded month for International racing in China and the surrounding region. The Macau Grand Prix will be held the week prior (Nov. 18-21) with the as yet unconfirmed Asian Le Mans race also scheduled for early November.
