NO THREAT TO SYDNEY GT RACE

The Australian GT Championship have denied rumours that they would not be on the grid for the Sydney street race in 2010.

A post on an Internet forum had claimed that the GTs had been replaced for Sydney, a story denied by Australian GT Director Rachael Wagg.

“I don’t know where they’d get that one from.” she said.

“Our calendar for next year is almost set and at this stage the only date not confirmed is a planned race at Phillip Island.”

Ms. Wagg said that it was possible that the GT series could run it’s own meeting at the Island if nothing suitable could be found.

The Shannons Nationals round is run at the same time as Targa Tasmania so several of the series regulars will be there. The Island Magic meeting in Novemeber is simply too close to Sydney’s date so that’s a no go as well.

So far the confirmed dates for the 2010 series include The Clipsal 500 meeting in Adelaide, The Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park, The Eastern Creek Festival of Sporting Cars, Bathurst and the Sydney 500 at Homebush.

As for Sydney, Ms. Wagg said that the meeting had been received very well from its’ competitors.

“We probably left the track with less damage than just about anybody.”

“The track was a bit bumpy in spots and the chicanes were a bit tight but I believe that most of those problems will be fixed for next year’s race.” she said.

One car confirmed for 2010 is Mark Eddy’s new Audi R8, the car is on the way and will be here in plenty of time for the opening round in Adelaide.

Eddy’s car will be the first Audi R8 GT3 to be sold to a private buyer outside of Europe.

Western Australian driver Ross Zampatti has bought Eddy’s previous car, the Lamborghini Gallardo and he too will join the series in Adelaide.

2009 Champion David Wall has yet to confirm his return to the series but he has said that if he does chose to defend his title it would not be in his current Porsche Carrera Cup S.

Wall hinted that the Porsches replacement would “probably be American”.

Speculation has it that the car may be a Corvette. Wall’s Father Des won the 2009 Australian Sports Sedan series in a Corvette.
