HOLDEN TURNS THE MOUNTAIN RED AS HRT WINS BATHURST

HOLDEN TURNS THE MOUNTAIN RED AS HRT WINS BATHURST

Holden have ended a three year drought at the famous Bathurst 1000 at Mount Panorama with a sweep of the podium led by Garth Tander & Will Davison.

Tander and Davison started from pole but it was far from an all the way win with several challenges through the day.

The victory was the second on the mountain for Tander but the first for Davison, the grandson of former multiple Australian Grand Prix winner Lex Davison and the cousin of 2009 Indy lights series runner up James.

Earlier it had looked like a dream win for Gary Rogers Motorsport pair David Besnard and Greg Ritter.

Besnard and Ritter who are both without a full time drive in Australia’s premier motorsport series were caught out by a late race safety car which also cost veteran pair Greg Murphy and Mark Skaife.

Second place in the race went to the BOC Gasses team of New Zealand driver Jason Richards and Channel Ten Formula One commentator Cameron McConville.

Third place went to the Garry Rogers Motorsport team of Lee Holdsworth and Michael Caruso who just held on by 4000th of a second ahead of Murphy and Skaife.

Pre-race favourites, series leader Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes were the first Ford home in fifth place.

It was a tough weekend for the Blue Oval as the factory supported Ford Performance racing team of Mark Winterbottom and Steven Richards.

The pair were in contention early until alternator problems caused them to replace a battery early in the race.

The battery came loose rupturing a fuel line which saw the Falcon burst into flames as rival teams extinguished the flames.

The win to Tander and Davison helped cut the margin between Davison and V8 Supercar series leader Whincup to 93 points as the series heads to the Gold Coast to support the A1GP Super GP in two weeks time.
