So called “Environmental” protesters have carried out their threat to sabotage Rally Australia, the 10th round of the World Rally Championship.
Despite failing in their attempts to stop the rally via legal means, protesters resorted to throwing rocks onto the road causing Special Stage Six to be cancelled.
Protesters also disguised themselves as marshalls and waved yellow flags at competitors causing then to slow down thus sabotaging their run.
Members of the No Rally Group were yesterday distributing flyers to local residents urging them to try and stop the event, even if it resulted in breaking the law.
“There is now no option but action,” the flyer read.
The protesters have been supported by a fringe radical group called “The Seventh Generation”.
NSW Police have brought in extra staff to the area to try and protect rally participents and spectators fiollowing several threats.
Superintendent Michael Kenny who is in charge of the operation said that despite intial promises from protest organisers that they would not do anything illeagal or put the lives of others at risk, he was preparing for the worst.
“I still have concerns regarding the intention of some radical protest groups to disrupt the event using unlawful and unusual tactics. However, a protest organiser has proactively met police to discuss their activities in a collaborative fashion. Police recognise not only the right of anyone to protest but also the right of everyone else to freely go about their business during the rally,” said Superintendent Kenny.
In spite of the support of local councilers and media, the rally seems to have the suport of most local residents.
A poll by the local Tweed daily news is currently running at over 70% in favour of the event.
