Reigning Australian Commodore Cup Champion Michael Tancredi has been remanded for sentencing after pleading guilty to a vicious street assault which left a Geelong man with serious head injuries.

Tancredi and his then friend, Andrew Pamvouxoglou, both pleaded guilty in the Geelong County Court on Wednesday to a charge of  recklessly causing serious injury.

According to Police, the assault, which took place back in 2007, occurred as the victim left the Eureka Hotel in Geelong and was waiting for a taxi.

The victim was taken to The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne where he remained in a coma for 24 hours with bleeding from the brain. He then spent a further six months undergoing rehabilitation.

Local Newspaper The Geelong Advertiser, reported that James McQuillan, Lawyer appearing for Tancredi, said his client conceded he may have reacted too quickly and did something he should not have done.

Mr McQuillan said that despite having two priors for assault, Tancredi was of “otherwise good character.”

He said Tancredi was running the family’s concreting business, engaged to an accountant and was well known and respected in motor racing circles as having the potential to become a V8 Supercar driver.

Tancredi took out the 2008 Commodore Cup series after finishing second at the final round at Sandown. Currently he sits in sixth place for the 2009 series.

Judge Anthony Howard revoked bail and remanded both men for sentencing on August 21.
